Founded in 2007, Music Box Films is a distributor of independent American, foreign language films, and documentaries. Films are released to theaters, DVD, Blu-ray, and to video on demand services. Music Box Films is based in Chicago and is owned and operated by Southport Music Box Corporation. "Tell No One" became the highest grossing foreign film in the United States, netting $6,000,000 in 2008, becoming the highest grossing foreign film of the year. This helped the company become established as a serious distributor.
Music Box Films are known for being critically acclaimed, artistic and profound. In 2014 the company again proves its savvy selection prowess with "Ida." Music Box reps were conspicuously absent form the red carpet event. Managing director Ed Arentz told the Chicago Tribune that the reason for the absence was because, "I couldn't bear the idea of hearing a name other than 'Ida.' The aftermath would've been too depressing." The director of 'Ida' touted Music Box by saying they did "a great job with very little money."
Clearly a leader in film distribution, Music Box Films' formula for success is tried and true, bringing audiences artfully produced and directed independent, foreign and documentary films that impact the audience with mature plots and unique themes.
