HD Sea Productions Inc. is a production company founded by Jimmy Hanson in 1994. He was a journalist covering a story about the Pacific Ocean when he was promptly fired for reporting secrets about the practice of hunting dolphins in Japan's international waters. When he was fired, he wanted to spread the word about the ocean's creatures and feature experts such as marine biologists. He created the company and soon raised funding to produce the first show on the channel called Big Blue. The company has since expanded and focuses on digital media distributed through various internet channels.
In 2008, Comcast bought the rights to Big Blue and hired producers to make new shows that revolve around scientific exploration and high definition video footage of underwater animals. The current shows on the channel include documentaries such Sea Creatures and Underneath the Blanket. Sea Creatures features Tom Hanes. He is a biologist who works for the University of Miami. His specialty is identifying rare species that live deep in the ocean near the floor. Underneath the Blanket is focused on uncovering the secrets that are hidden by large organizations such as oil companies. Through a series of bribes and threats, the show claims that large companies are dumping trash into the world's oceans in an attempt to increase profits and escape responsibility.
