Founded in 2006, Gravitas is a leading distributor of independent movies and documentaries to the global Video-on-Demand (VOD) marketplace. “Gravitas Movies” is one of the video website, YouTube.com’s first paid-subscription channels. As part of the worlds largest video website’s new programming lineup, the Gravitas channel will launch with over seventy-five films available in high definition quality and will add between 10 and 15 new titles each month to paying subscribers. This channel’s aim is to showcase low-budget films, as well as featuring festival favorites from Sundance, SXSW, Tribeca, Cannes, and Toronto, according to Gravitas senior vice president, Michael Murphy. They also have a strong line-up of independent horror films.
Gravitas Channel specializes in the aggregation of comedy, documentary, drama, horror, and thriller content that is accessed through DirectTV, broadband internet websites, Hulu, Vudu, Roku, and mobile, hospitality, and airline industries. Gravitas also provides in home access to new movie releases on the same day as the theatrical release. Gravitas plans to release 500 films a year and has recently signed a distribution deal with Warner Brothers. They also have VOD deals with North America’s largest cable provider, Comcast. The VOD market is projected to double in 2015.
