The Gold Channel was originally launched as UK Gold before it split into just the Gold Channel and airs in Ireland and the UK. It features classic comedy shows such as Fawlty Towers, Pramface, Bewitched, Absolutely Fabulous, and The Office and is a subscription only service. It also occasionally shows repeats of other broadcasts from the BBC and other networks.
Over the last couple of years UKTV decided to spend money on their own original shows and UK Gold was given a very large budget to create some of their own new comedy shows. The channel is currently working on a variety of new programs to offer audiences from comedy dramas to panel shows. The first program is actually a refreshed version of Yes, Prime Minister.
The Gold Channel has been widely successful despite being a pay subscription channel which has led to several spin off channels that also play classic and modern comedy shows. Today the channel plays a mix of both classic and current comedy shows along with comedy talk shows and skit shows. It broadcasts around the clock and has a steady stream of programming options that seems to appeal to most age groups and generations equally.
