It has a variety of formats including films, television shows, and music shows on the platform. It began in 2010 when Andrew Shimer and James Platt formed a production company out of their living room. They started with only basic equipment such as a cheap microphone, a laptop, and home video recorder. Their goal was to produce enough content to prove their concept and raise enough money to fund larger products. They were successful in begin one of the first production companies to use crowdsourcing (through Kickstarter) to obtain the funds necessary to complete their initial project.

Now Film Ideas on Demand has expanded beyond the city of Austin to provide film lovers everywhere with the opportunity to view independent and student films on the internet for a small fee. Examples of films from the company include titles such as Jeremy in Wonderland, Michael Cross and the Piano Gang, and Joyless. Joyless is a love story about a young couple from a small town in Colorado. They are hiking one day when they are suddenly separated by an avalanche. Through 12 tough days and nights, the two young hikers must attempt to survive and find eachother in harsh conditions. It received numerous awards such as "Best in Class" and "Best Direction" at the 2014 annual Pierney Film Festival Awards ceremony.
