Discovery HD Theater is an HD channel part of the Discovery Communications network. Originally airing in the US, it now airs throughout South America including Brazil. The channel focuses on non-fiction programs relating to specialized topics of interest such as Sports, Travel, Automobiles and other subjects of predominantly male interest.
To reflect its male oriented subject content, the channel changed its name to Velocity in the US which it continues to operate under today. Popular shows include American Chopper, a show about chopper style motorcycles, Extreme Engineering, a show where complex engineering structures are explored, and Mighty Ships, where billion dollar cruise ships are showcased. Other shows include Rides, Golf Escape, Corwin's Quest and City Slickers. The channel also airs shows related to nature such as Rogue Nature and Planet Earth.
The channel also airs occasional specials, such as Paris 2010: The Great Flood or One Six Right: The Romance of Flying. These specials are longer than regular shows aired on the channel and are more detailed in their focus on a particular event or subject. The theme of these shows remains consistent with the channel's overall theme however, and they are often related to engineering mechanics or structural marvels.
Discovery HD Theater is also available in non-HD in certain areas but certain shows such as HD traveler, Destination HD and HD Getaways are exclusively available in HD. These shows primarily focus on travel and holiday destinations. Certain specials are also exclusively aired on the HD channel, Discovery HD Theater.
