Canadian Based company CINAR is a currently defunct company that operated out of Toronto ON. Now known as the Cookie Jar Company since 2004, they cater to children's entertainment and produce children's materials and media catered to the younger audience. They currently have operating offices not only in Canada but also international locations in California, London, Japan and other headquarters in various locations. One of the most famous shows from the CINAR era were the well-received Zaboomafoo, Arthur, and Caillou which all aired on the PBS network. They also produced the Nickelodeon hit show Are You Afraid Of the Dark? Which aired on the Nickelodeon Network.
Cinar was involved in the notable CINAR v. Robinson scandal caused the company to go under due to restitution to cover infringement of former employees, most notably illustrator Claude Robinson and Les Productions Nileim Inc, the company Robinson owned. In the end, the damages were too much for CINAR to recover from.
After the scandal, CINAR rebranded themselves to The Cookie Jar Company and also partnered with fellow children's television producer DIC Entertainment and numerous other companies as a part of their rebranding process. Since then The Cookie Jar Company has been working on company acquisitions and partnership deals, such as company American Greetings which produces popular children's show Care Bears and Strawberry Shortcake.
As of 2012, The Cookie Jar Company has been acquired by also Canadian based DHX Media for $111 Million in a merger to become the largest children's television producing company.
