Anglia Television is the name of the independent television channel dedicated to the East Anglia region of the United Kingdom. This region is close to London, but maintains in staunch independence from the capital, whilst being strongly influenced by the economy of its more important neighbor.
Anglia Television started in the late 1950’s and has shown that complex independent spirit through its development. It's main headquarters and studios were set up in the Norfolk, UK city of Norwich. Although in recent years the need for studio space in that city has diminished, the station still maintains a presence in the City of its birth.
Although influenced by the close proximity of the Capital of the UK, it had its own distinct output. Perhaps one of its most iconic productions was a long-running quiz show, with its iconic opening catchphrase “and now, from Norwich, it’s the quiz of the week, the Sale of the Century”. This show aired over 400 episodes during the period 1971 to 1983, and was later taken on by other channels.
Anglia Television has used a number of station idents over the years, the original being a statue of a silver knight on a silver horse. This iconic image became so associated with the station that when a book was created to mark its 40th anniversary, it was called A Knight On The Box.
Although much reduced in independent output, Anglia Television retains its unique identity, and is keenly watched by the local community.
