'The Voice' Coach Blake Shelton Gets in a Twitter Controversy Over Anti-Gay Lyrics

'The Voice' Coach Blake Shelton Gets in a Twitter Controversy Over Anti-Gay Lyrics Be careful what you tweet: the internet has a way of misinterpreting messages, no matter how clear you think they are.

Blake Shelton learned this the hard way last night, when the country star and coach on "The Voice" tweeted the following: "Re-writing my fav Shania Twain song.. Any man that tries Touching my behind He's gonna be a beaten, bleedin', heaving kind of guy..."

At first look, it seems like Shelton is implying that if a gay man hits on him, he's going to beat him senseless. That's how GLAAD (the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) took it, calling the tweet unacceptable and wondering "how Shania feels about seeing her anthem about strong women and female empowerment turned into a violent threat."

Shelton was incredulous to the point of defiance at first, tweeting "Ba! Ha! Reading all my anti-gay hate tweets…. Ha! Ha! If people only knew even a little about me, my family and friends. Dumb asses." He went on to explain what he meant: "Its meant to be from a girls point of view.. Thus, ‘Shania Twain.’"

It would seem that this morning, Blake finally realized how people could take it the wrong way, because he became apologetic. "Hey y’all allow me to seriously apologize for the misunderstanding with the whole re-write on the Shania song last night," tweeted Shelton. "It honestly wasn’t even meant that way… I now know that their are people out there waiting to jump at everything I say on here or anywhere. But when it comes to gay/lesbian rights or just feelings… I love everybody. So go look for a real villain and leave me out of it!!!"

Since then, Shelton has tweeted @GLAAD and asked for their help in clearing the matter up. "I want my fans and @nbcthevoice fans to know that anti-gay and lesbian violence is unacceptable!!!!!" tweeted Shelton. You can tell he's serious because of all the exclamation marks.

Judging by his behavior on "The Voice," I think Blake's telling the truth here...he just tweeted something that (understandably) got taken the wrong way.
