Reports: Jonathan Rhys Meyers Attempts Suicide (Update)

Reports: Jonathan Rhys Meyers Attempts Suicide (Update) Update: The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that an unnamed source has said that Rhys Meyers was not, in fact, trying to kill himself, but had fallen off the wagon and had been drinking heavily.

"It was not a suicide attempt. He did relapse and was hospitalized briefly for that, but was released," the source told the magazine. Still no official word from his reps.

Original Story:

Jonathan Rhys Meyers, star of the Showtime series "The Tudors," apparently tried (unsuccessfully) to kill himself yesterday by ingesting pills, according to UK paper The Sun.

An actor and a model, Rhys Meyers is probably best known for his critically acclaimed role as Henry VIII in "The Tudors" and for a part in "Bend It Like Beckham," though the incredibly talented actor has also had stand-out roles in films like Woody Allen's "Match Point," "Velvet Goldmine,""Mission: Impossible III" and the BBC series "Gormenghast," while also serving as a model for Hugo Boss.

The Irish actor has reportedly been in and out of rehab five times for a drinking problem, including a recent stint at a facility in South Africa.

"Paramedics answering a 999 call found him slumped on the floor." according to The Sun, "but they had to call police after he refused treatment at the scene for more than 30 minutes. The 33-year-old - who has been battling a drink problem - was finally taken to a hospital near his home in Maida Vale, Central London, on Tuesday night."

A Scotland Yard spokesman told People Magazine: "We can confirm we were called by the London Ambulance Service to an address in NW8 to report to a man refusing treatment. Police attended, and the man was taken by ambulance to a central London hospital. That was the end of our involvement."

According to The Sun, Meyers was discharged early Wednesday. Reporters met Meyers when he exited the hospital, and he had no comment at the time.

We're wishing Rhys Meyers the best in his recovery and rehabilitation process. He has rare talents - sometimes bordering on genius - and it would be a shame to lose him to substance abuse. Besides, if a guy like Robert Downey, Jr. (a guy with a similarly manic style of acting and a very nasty drug problem) can overcome his demons and still perform on such a high level, hopefully he can as well.
