White-Powder Scare: CBS Mailroom Receives Suspicious Envelope Aimed at 'Dancing With the Stars'

Tensions once more rose at CBS Television City in Hollywood when police investigated an envelope that mail room staff reported was spilling white powder, TMZ reported.

The Huffington Post later quoted Los Angeles Police Department spokeswoman Diana Figueroa as claiming "there was no threat associated with the incident."

She made the point that the envelope was never associated specifically with a possible anthrax attack, but since the Sept. 11 attacks, that's often the first assumption when word leaks that anyone important receives a package bearing white powder.

CBS has been through this drill before. Employees of both the "The Late Show with David Letterman" and "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson" received similar suspicious envelopes in an August 2010 scare.

The envelope addressed to Ferguson was found to have contained cornmeal. Also last year, someone sent an envelope addressed to Bristol Palin that contained a suspicious white substance.

The network's most severe scare occured shortly after the Sept. 11 attacks. An employee handling then-"CBS Evening News" anchor Dan Rather was officially reported Oct. 19, 2001 to have contracted the cutaneous form of anthrax, the same strain that had also infected an assistant to "NBC Nightly News" anchor Tom Brokaw and an ABC News employee's seven-month-old child in the weeks prior.

LAPD personal are reportedly in the process of testing the powder. An FBI representative close to the investigation declined comment to TMZ, but the blog reports that it's been confirmed the powder was meant for someone associated with "Dancing With The Stars" - which shoots at the studio - but not a contestant or on-air personality.
