Coroner's Report: Amy Winehouse Death Caused by Alcohol

A British coroner has officially ruled Amy Winehouse's death on July 23 a "death by misadventure" brought about by alcohol poisoning.

Coroner Suzanne Greenway reported that Winehouse's blood-alcohol content was five times the legal drunk-driving limit.

“The unintended consequence of such potentially fatal levels (of alcohol) was her sudden and unexpected death,” said Greenaway

According to pathologist Suhail Baithun, the singer had a “very large quantity of alcohol” before her death. The Washington Post reported that the level of alcohol in her blood was 416 milligrams per 100 milliliter, or a blood alcohol level of 0.4 percent.

Police Detective Inspector Les Newman previously reported that he'd found Winehouse's body with empty vodka bottles scattered nearby and Dr. Christina Romete, Winehouse's physician, also claims that Winehouse had resumed drinking days before being found dead.

Romete had also prescribed Librium recently to help Winehouse deal with withdrawal symptoms.

Winehouse family spokesman Chris Goodman said the family was relieved get a final word on what killed the singer.

“The court heard that Amy was battling hard to conquer her problems with alcohol and it is a source of great pain to us that she could not win in time,” said Goodman.

Though it should go without saying, those who didn't presume that a drug overdose killed Winehouse probably would've guessed Winehouse following in John Bonham or Bon Scott's footsteps next.

It would've been a relief if she could've instead left this life the way Stevie Ray Vaughan left his: having fought the demons, won, and died maybe tragically young but clean - and not at the hands of a foreign substance or dependency.

In that sense, maybe SRV got off light. The drugs and the booze nearly killed him, but his last song was a legendary Alpine Valley Ampitheater jam with Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, Eric Clapton and SRV's older brother Jimmie Vaughan, before perishing in a helicopter crash - but with a clean soul, clear mind, clear conscience and a healthy body.

Winehouse died the way, unfortunately, many expected but still always felt a little uneasy envisioning.
