Watch Stephen Colbert Make His SC Primary Run Official On-Air
by Sean ComerOne Day, Fans of "The Colbert Report" will call host Stephen Colbert's bluff, actually elect him to public office, and he may very well then be left to wonder "Well . . . now what? They actually took me seriously . . ."
The Comedy Central faux pundit promised a big announcement this week. Thursday night, he delivered. As he announced during "The Colbert Report," Colbert will transfer his super PAC to "The Daily Show" host and pal Jon Stewart so that Colbert can make a leisurely jog toward the White House. As his on-screen "I'm doing it!" graphic suggested, the comedian will start by entering the Republican primary in his home state of South Carolina.
And with the way candidates Ron Paul, Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum and Jon Huntsman cancel each other out between fairly even support and varying levels of bat-s*** crazy, one shouldn't put actually winning past Colbert, either.
During the segment, Colbert consulted with his attorney Trevor Potter, Stewart appeared on the set, the two signed some documents and Stewart "activated" the newly named "Definitely Not Coordinated With Stephen Colbert Super PAC."
Think about the every-four-year "Indecision" election coverages by Comedy Central, though: for as much as Stewart, Colbert and the like may goof on candidates, they come off only slightly less ridiculous than some candidates themselves. These two might be over-the-top themselves sometimes, but at least when they do it, it's on purpose. When the likes of, say, Michele Bachmann, Sarah Palin or Ron Paul do it, we just all collectively wonder "Is there a name for what's wrong with you?"
God bless the "United States of South Carolina."
Watch Colbert announce his candidacy below, and tell us: is a Stephen Colbert presidency the best idea ever . . . or BEST IDEA EVER?(!)
