Watch: The New Trailer for Tom Cruise's 'Rock Of Ages'

Tom Cruise probably has mind pretty pre-occupied with how his heavily hyped "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" will fair when it opens Dec. 16. Still, if he needs a distraction, he must be pretty happy with this first trailer for 2012's rock/jukebox musical "Rock of Ages."

Also starring Julianne Hough, Russell Brand and "30 Rock" star Alec Baldwin, it's the first big-screen take on the hit Broadway musical.

It's set amid the 1987 Sunset Strip rock-club scene where small-town girl Sherrie (presumably livin' in a lonely world, and played by Julianne Hough) meets city-boy Drew (one would hope born and raised in south Detroit, but either way played by Diego Boneta.)

Together, they embark on one arena-rock-fueled whirlwind romance, which is shined down upon by rock god Stacee Jaxx, played by Cruise.

Their whole love affair, of course, is laced with the finest 80s hits by Journey, Poison, Twisted Sister, Styx, Asia, Pat Benatar and others.

There was a time I couldn't have possibly wanted to see a flick like this - mostly because I'd believe that Cruise actually thought he was the sawed-off Second Coming of Jesus Christ, if that actually lined up with his Church of Aliens beliefs.

That was way, way before he donned a fat-suit and skull-cap to jam out epically to Flo Rida's "Low" in "Tropic Thunder." Now? I'd even endure a Russell Brand performance to see Cruise play a stage presence-oozing rock star.

Yeah, that would've been enough. But toss in at no extra charge Catherine Zeta-Jones as a Bible-beating moral crusader that leads a church-lady rendition of "We're Not Gonna Take It?"

Come June 1, 2012, I'll be camped out waiting for this one.
