Sons of Anarchy - Season 5 Episode 6 - Small World - Recap
by TravisExciting, dark and dirty describes this episode. If you missed any past episodes go back and watch because a lot is packed into every one. Mayhem galore as Jax Teller(Charlie Hunnam), who is really a good guy, right, gets sucked into taking care of more business endeavors. He tries to do the right thing but the path he leads gets him involved with blood untold. Trying to hold on mentally while dealing with the news of Opie's(Ryan Hurst) death causes us to question his sanity. Whatever that may be its going be a bumpy ride with lots of body parts. He helps a glorified hooker keep her job and does not seem at all concerned with the cold blooded killing of a bystander. Comically shrugging it off like "Oh Well".
The amount of damage done in this episode is quite remarkable. Like a scene from armageddon. Jax deals with the news of Opie's demise like you think he would, avenge or revenge whichever you like. It's gonna get dirty. Dealing with the guard who helped plan the whole deal gets ugly. Damon Pope (Harold Perrineau) is the informant that gives Jax what he needs to deal with the guard. The club has never dealt with a person as powerful as Pope. He is the biggest threat to them yet. The debt the club owes to Pope is one that must be astronomical since they are willing to help with the drug cartel and Jax has no problem unfortunately. Taking the deal to the club for a formal vote without telling of the 2% cut he will get, Jax is convinced by greed surely that this is the thing to do. Pope seems to bring the devil in a blue suit personification to this episode. Demanding much for the information he brings to the revelation of Opie's death. Pope does not seem to have an ulterior motive except to flex his muscles and show what power over everyone he really has.
The amount of force and viciousness that Jax uses to kill the guard with a snow globe of all things is gruesome. The guard’s wife bites it as well but the execution of the guard was imperative. Jax has no problem with Tig (Kim Coates) shooting the guard’s wife. All this murder and business deal with Pope is Jax way of dealing with the mess the club got into from season 4.
The Pope deal is Jax's thing and definitely bringing strife to the club. Manipulation of Jax is deep but nothing new. It keeps the story moving forward and ever twisting and turning the plot.
Clay (Ron Perlman) is trying to be a voice of reason. Clay has been ill and throwing in a little side story that surely will bring light to the situation. Using the oxygen tank unnecessarily is Clay's way of causing confusion in what has happened. The wife of Roosevelt (Rockmond Dunbar) dies in the hospital. Rita (Merle Dandridge) injured when Clay's group stormed their house and thus keeping with the bloody theme. Clay uses an age old trick by keeping the oxygen tank on and informing Juice (Theo Rossi) that things for him are not looking "cough cough" good health wise. This is confusing at times because Unser (Dayton Callie) seems to be figuring it out but it is good stuff and will lead to more amazing material for next time.
We have not even discussed Carla (Wanda de Jesus) killing herself in front of Gemma and Nero. Gemma (Katy Segal) briefly gets involved with Niro (Jimmy Smits) and Carla gets down and dirty. Really nasty stuff when we find out Carla is Niro's half sister who "really" loves him. Clay disposes Carla's body but his sneaky manipulation this season seems all a plot to get Niro away from Gemma.
Lastly, Tara (Maggie Sift) holds out on Jax about what she knows with Otto (Kurt Sutter) not wanting to recant testimony against the club in the RICO case. What will she do to keep her husband and the club out of trouble in this case? If you miss a beat the story’s twists and turns will send you into a tale spin.
