Nickelback Responds to Thanksgiving Petition with Funny or Die Video
by Andy NeuenschwanderAdmittedly, when I found out that Nickelback was going to be playing at halftime on Thanksgiving during the Lions/Packers game, I was pretty upset.
As a Lions fan, I want our annual tradition to be marked with a performance from a respected band, or at the very least a musician who is a native of Detroit (this is why Kid Rock was fine last year). And as a fan of good music, I would rather that Nickelback not exist at all.
But as much as I, and I'm sure many of you out there, hate Nickelback, their latest move was pretty awesome.
The band appears in a new video on Funny or Die, titled "Nickelback Responds to NFL Petition." In the video, a music exec (played by the very funny Paul Scheer, who stars in "The League") sits down with the band to try to figure out why Detroiters hate them so much, and what they can do to change it.
The members of Nickelback are tremendously good-natured about the whole thing: when bandmate Ryan Peake suggests that they open for themselves to remedy the situation, bassist Mike Kroeger posits, "Wait a minute, doesn't everybody hate Nickelback?"
Scheer suggests that maybe it's because they're Canadian, and recommends some Detroit-themed costumes as a remedy. By taking it all in stride and being able to make fun of themselves, Nickelback has earned their spot on the Thanksgiving telecast. I will begrudgingly accept.
