Midseason Previews: A Network by Network Breakdown of 2012 TV
by Richard SharpThe term “mid-season” is pretty misleading, really. The fact is that ,come January, most channels start a whole new schedule or slate of programming, adding new shows, removing weaker performers and tweaking their timeslots to maximize audience.
In the case of networks like HBO, it’s a wholesale makeover, with underperforming series’ being kicked to the curb to make room for high-profile new ones like "Luck" and returning greats like "Game of Thrones."
At NBC, it means making ludicrous programming decisions that make our writers very angry, like shelving the genius-level comedy “Community” for garbage like “Whitney.”
Then there’s AMC, where a new year means the return of shows like “The Walking Dead” and (finally! Woohoo!) “Mad Men.”
Overall, it looks like there's plenty of great shows returning, from quality offerings like Showtime's "Shameless" to popular hits like "American Idol," "Jersey Shore," "The Vampire Diaries," "The Voice" and "The Bachelor."
