What Inspired Lady Gaga's 'Marry The Night': 'One Of The Worst Days Of My Life'
by Sean Comer
Sure, she can be "odd."
That is, she's "odd" as long as by "odd" you mean that she can seem eye-rollingly self-indulgent, lets her manufactured image overshadow really considerable talent sometimes and seems more than a little out-of-touch at times with how Earth-born humans think.
But one must also give her this much: she expresses things nearly everybody at some point feels, but does so often in ways nobody else would think to express them. And it works. It connects.
She recently told E! News exclusively that her latest single and characteristically out-there music video, "Marry The Night," is an interpretation of what she called "one of the worst days of (her) life."
"It was one of the worst days of my life and it happened quite quickly, but in my mind, when I think back on that period of my life, it all happened very slow," she said. It turns out that what inspired the song - which really might be the best thing she's released yet - was being dropped by her first record label, Island Def Jam, in a move that has probably since driven whoever made that call to supuku.
Gaga told E! that as much as she confesses the song's identity as a love song to her native New York, to "marry the night" is to own or "marry" one's obstacles.
"In order to be great writing music," or whatever else it is someone wants to do, she said, "you have to acknowledge what is wrong with your work, or what is dishonest about it. What have I not been really great at?"
To hear Gaga describe the one greatest obstacle she's wed since that time, and to hear just how vividly she remembers that pivotal moment, check out the video below.
