Go On, Make Fun Of Her NOW: Rebecca Black Donates 'Friday' Proceeds to Japan
by Andy Neuenschwander
Ever since Rebecca Black's pop song (and I'm using the term "song" loosely here) "Friday" became a viral hit on YouTube, the signer has been very often ridiculed.
But like her or not, Black made a case last night on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" that her sudden fame isn't such a bad thing: she announced that some of the proceeds from her music video will go towards helping victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
So far, the song has ranked as high as #33 on iTunes and sold about 40,000 copies. Combine that with her sales on Amazon and her YouTube earnings, and the internet star has earned somewhere around $50,000 in her first two weeks. Not exactly chump change, is it?
Black also sounded off about the many parodies of her song in the interview with Leno. "They can either be really hilarious and make me laugh until I cry," said Black, "but others are really lame.
"Like, I think they're like...like wow," she added.
Not everyone has been a critic of Rebecca's work, however. The singer mentioned in the interview that Ryan Seacrest and Simon Cowell have both reached out to her, and that she has heard from Willow Smith, Nicole Ritchie and Joel Madden on Twitter.
Check out the interview below, which includes one of the parodies that Black called "pretty good."
