'Ghostbusters 3' is Going to Happen!
by Shannon KeirnanAfter a long, long time in the works, "Ghostbusters 3" has been greenlighted... with one major change.
Director Ivan Reitman, who developed the first two iconic films, has withdrawn from the helm and taken on a smaller role as producer.
The decision came about after the death of his good friend and "Ghostbusters" alum Harold Ramis. Reitman told Deadline he was never entirely sure about his involvement in the project, and Ramis' death cinched his decision to step down as director.
"It was such an amazing time in my life 30 years ago, and I felt that way on the second film," Reitman said. "With Harold no longer with us, I couldn't see it."
Reitman will remain involved in the film in his reduced role, and will assist Sony's Amy Pascal in finding a replacement. Talk has it that director Barry Sonnenfeld may be a hot candidate, for his experience in films with a similar air ("Men in Black"). He has also worked alongside the "Ghostbusters 3" script writer, Etan Cohen.
The film's shoot date is still up in the air, but Reitman foresees a start in 2015. The film is being billed as a reboot of the series, and there's no word yet on casting. With Hollywood heavyweights Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson (along with Sigourney Weaver and Rick Moranis) in the originals, it will take some serious acting chops to step up to this project.
Who would you like to see cast in the new "Ghostbusters?"
