Cate Blanchett To Be Cinderella's Evil Stepmother!
by Shannon KeirnanSince Disney apparently has nothing better to do lately than re-make beloved classics and buy “Star Wars,” expect a new, live-action “Cinderella” to be hitting theaters sometime next year.
Little is known yet about the flick, but that Cate Blanchett is in talks to play the role of the evil stepmother.
Perfect casting? Pop a grey wig on the lady and we're done.
She’ll be joining the growing list of talented actresses who stepped in to be a little evil, including Angelina Jolie as Maleficent, Charlize Theron in “Snow White and the Huntsman,” and Julia Roberts in “Mirror Mirror.”
In the upcoming “Oz: The Great and Powerful,” Rachel Weisz, Michelle Williams, and Mila Kunis will all be portraying various witches.
Apparently the fantastical is currently in vogue.
The “Cinderella” re-make will have “Never Let Me Go” director Mark Romanek on board. Chris Weitz of “About a Boy” will be revamping a script originally drafted by Aline Brosh McKenna, who also wrote “The Devil Wears Prada.”
The project has actually been a go since 2010, meant as a follow-up on the massive success of “Alice in Wonderland.”
Blanchett will be appearing this month as Galadriel in “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” as well as a whole handful of other roles. With such a busy schedule it must be hard to nail down the award winner, but with that sternly beautiful face and eerie voice, Blanchett as the cold-hearted stepmother of Cinderella is the perfect cast.
Who will be stepping into the title character? No word yet, but they have set the bar high for this cast.
