Adult Swim Picks Up New Shows; Patton Oswalt and Paul Scheer Among Creators
by Andy Neuenschwander
Adult Swim, the late-night block of alternative comedy and animation on Cartoon Network, announced its slate of new series pickups and renewed shows yesterday, and it's an impressive list with some familiar (and funny) names.
Paul Scheer of "Human Giant" and "Piranha 3D" fame will be bringing "NTSF:SD:SUV" to the network. That stands for "National Terrorism Strike Force: San Diego: Sport Utility Vehicle," by the way. That ought to give you an idea of the tone of the show.
Another exciting new addition is "The Heart, She Holler," which can only be described as a hillbilly soap opera. That series will star Patton Oswalt, who is truly one of the best comedians out there today.
"China, IL" will focus on two brothers who teach at a state university in China, Illinois. Their lessons will mostly likely be completely inaccurate, however, as the two are more concerned with being awesome.
"Tight Bros" seems to be a mix between a Christian mission and "Jersey Shore," as it centers on two religious bros who want to both spread the word of God and hit the club to pick up hot chicks.
The last new series (for the near future, anyway) is an animated version of "Black Dynamite." The movie, which spoofed blacksploitation films of the 1970's, was a major cult hit that has also spawned a comic book.
Adult Swim also announced renewals of "Aqua Teen Hunger Force," which is now titled "Aqua Unit Patrol Squad 1," as well as "Children's Hospital," "Delocated," "Mary Shelley's Frankenhole," "Metalocalypse," "Mongo Wrestling Alliance," "Robot Chicken," "Squidbillies," and "Superjail!"
