What Exactly is J.J. Abrams' 'Super 8' About? Official Synopsis Finally Revealed

Anyone who had to deal with the mysteries surrounding "Cloverfield" and the enigmas within enigmas in each episode of "Lost" knows just how secretive J.J. Abrams can be about his projects.

So it's no surprise the the upcoming "Super 8" (produced, written and directed by Abrams) has been shrouded in secrecy. Even the Super Bowl ad revealed very little about the plot.

Today, we got a small glimpse into what exactly happens in "Super 8," not to mention a reason for why it's called "Super 8." An official synopsis released today tells us the following:

"In the summer of 1979, a group of friends in a small Ohio town witness a catastrophic train crash while making a super 8 movie and soon suspect that it was not an accident.  Shortly after, unusual disappearances and inexplicable events begin to take place in town, and the local Deputy tries to uncover the truth –  something more terrifying than any of them could have imagined."

The word all along was that the film would have something to do with aliens, but things are usually not that simple when Abrams is involved.

We might know more soon: audiences seeing "Battle: Los Angeles" this weekend will supposedly be treated to a full theatrical trailer for "Super 8."
